Yet the car with the inline-6 has a shorter wheelbase & lower center of mass than the car with the boxer-4.

Also, the 335hp RWD Supra beats the BMW  M340i to 60, despite the latter having over 380 hp and AWD.

Calling it now, this car is gonna haul like hell and handle like heaven.

And the Z4 M40i adds another 47 hp and wind in your face but nobody cares because it’s not a coupe that says Supra on it.

Seeing these in white today, all of a sudden I like them much more! Maybe it’s because it softens up all the crazy angles going on?

I just wish Toyota had done the engineering rather than Subaru and BMW, respectively.

Toyota is degrading themselves with these inferior cars under their name, and also the rusty Mazda2

I still don’t understand why Toyota ever collaborated with anyone for this car. They have the resources and engineering to make it a show piece.

I’m calling it now, and am saying that the only people who are going to buy this thing are Japanese Fanbois, and they’ll depreciate heavily into the third owners.

Starting price US$49k

$55k for launch edition

It’s honestly a decent value , biggest question is did Toyota make the right product placement in today’s market.

Allegedly, Toyota did all the tuning of the Supra’s B58 themselves in order to get it up to their “we can warranty this” standards.

I’ll be interested to see how it runs, long-term, versus the Z4.

Kinja'd!!!1

If the BRZ isn’t front/mid, then the fact that the Supra IS front-mid is even more amazing considering the wheelbase vs. cylinder count.

The boxer-4 is 2 cylinders long, while the inline-6 is SIX cylinders long. Somehow, Toyota/BMW fit 3x as much longitudinal engine in a smaller wheelbase.

Didnt know that, hopefully it was getting rid all on BMWs shitty plastic and replaced the gaskets.

Even so as I previously stated in another post I would have rathered a Toyota engine so it didn’t start leaking at 80K.

If Toyota makes the B58 reliable and easy to service, the universe might implode right when the first one hits 300k miles with just routine maintenance.

Not sure about that 0 -60 claim. My E92 335ix   will get there i n the l ow 5s. Add in 50~60 more hp with the xdrive an d I think it will pull that supra hard until 80mph or so. I hope that Supra can shake off some of the bad mojo surrounding it but I just keep getting an LFA/ NSX feel from it.

but yeh... for bigger engines this country sucks... least when you buy new

(all that added tax actually has very little effect on resale value.... you pretty much eat the tax the moment you drive it off the lot)

If the driver is 5'4" or under, you can fit an actual human in the back seat, provided said human is also 5'4" or under.

Kinja'd!!!1

At 6'2" (all legs) I struggle to sit in the front of a BRZ. If my legs are comfortable, it’s hard to reach the steering wheel. Doesn’t telescope far enough to reach comfortably.

The Supra might be an improvement, who knows?

Kinja'd!!! McMike > way2blu does a rev update

The engine has to be behind the front axle centerline for it to count as “mid.” Not just most of it, but all of it. Not sure if they just consider the “ engine” to be just the block, or if all the ancillaries need to be behind it too.. ) I think it’s just the block, so the alternator, AC compressor, PS pump, etc can overlap)

The 86/BRX twins’ block falls right on the front axle centerline , so it can’t count as mid. It’s not as bad as a WRX, but it still counts as “front”

By the look of the Supra’ s shock towers, It doesn’t look like it’s front-mid either .

Kinja'd!!!

Doesn’t mean it won’t haul like hell and handle like heaven.

This shows the real problem with the new Supra. It’s a sports car. The Supra was always a sporty GT not an outright sports car

It’s also way more expensive (the 6-cylinder  Supra is priced about the same as the 4-cylinder Z4) and will need a roll bar to be let in to most trackdays.

Kinja'd!!! facw > Chariotoflove

It’s a niche product. If they did it themselves, they’d probably be losing money. The relative lack of <$100,000 sports cars on the market speaks to the fact that they really aren’t very profitable.

Kinja'd!!! Chariotoflove > facw
01/14/2019 at 18:50

Kinja'd!!!0

If it’s a business case that you can’t make money on it unless you share costs (and I think that’s a solid reason) , then just don’t build it, because your profit margins will be razor thin anyway . What’s the point when you’re printing money with Camrys and 4Runners? Or if you do it with a collaborator, then name it something else, like they did with the 86. But when you resurrect the name Supra, knowing full what what that name evokes, I feel it should be a symbol and testament to Toyota’s engineering prowess and skill in making a sports car. There is legacy wrapped up in it.

This thing is so heavily BMW, it doesn’t do that.

Maybe, I mean I do think they half-assed this. They wanted fill the hole in their lineup because having it empty was an embarrassment , but also didn’t want to spend heavily enough to do it right.

Congratulations, you’ve arrived at one of my pet peeves: the “because track days, bro” response! Guess what? Most people who like cars don’t actually take their cars to the track. I ’m sure only a small percent of both the Supra and Z4 will ever see a racetrack. They’re toys.

(And for the trackdaybros, at least with the first two versions of the Z4, the integrated roll hoops are a llowed at some track days depending on what organization is r unning the track day .)

Yes the twins are front/mid , but the center of the engine is just behind front wheels. By lopping out the rear seat they can then move the driver back 18 in and drop the engine.

I’m not a fan of modern BMWs, but had I been in the market for a coupe in that price range I’d pick that M2 over the Supra any day. Mostly due to the transmission, but the looks of the Supra help me pick the BMW too.
